General English Plus

Our General English Plus course provides students with General English lessons in the morning and specialist subjects in the afternoon.

In the morning General English classes will work on all areas of English: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. In the afternoon classes, students can choose between Communication Skills, Cambridge FCE and IELTS Exam Preparation.

All our courses are British Council accredited and taught by suitably qualified teachers.

General English + Communication Skills

All levels elementary (Strong A1-A2) to advanced (C1).

The emphasis is on effective communication, especially speaking and listening but also writing and pronunciation. Classroom activities will focus on a variety of situations and tasks.

Course Objectives

To improve your ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English by:

  • Improving your command of functional language
  • Improving your command of spoken and written discourse and formal and informal styles
  • Giving you listening, speaking and writing practice in a variety of situations and tasks
  • Improving your pronunciation, stress and intonation
Levels and Progress

You will have a test on your first day to place you in a class at the right level. Our weekly progress tests and monthly tutorials make sure you move up to a higher level as soon as you are ready.

The levels are:

  • Elementary (Strong A1-A2) Can communicate with enough language for basic needs and simple situations.
  • Pre-Intermediate (A2) Can communicate with enough language for everyday practical needs.
  • Intermediate (B1) Can communicate effectively in most situations but sometimes has to work hard to communicate effectively.
  • Upper Intermediate (B2) Can communicate effectively in most situations and can usually easily re-phrase in order to be understood.
  • Advanced (C1) Can communicate effectively in all but the most difficult situations.

General English + IELTS Examination Preparation

Minimum level intermediate (B1).

Study for IELTS, an internationally recognised English language qualification. After General English lessons in the morning, afternoon classes will focus on tasks, strategies and practice for the IELTS exam.

Course Objectives

To help you achieve good results in IELTS by:

  • Training you in the skills and techniques needed for the exam
  • Giving you extensive IELTS examination practice
  • Improving the level of your English through a combination of language input and practice in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Developing the study skills that will enable you to continue to learn English after your course.
Levels and Progress

Coursebook

We lend students a coursebook (there is no need for them to purchase one). Teachers will also bring extra materials to the lessons for students to keep. Should a student wish to purchase their own copy of a coursebook, we can advise where to purchase this from.

Outside Class

Students will have regular homework to consolidate what they learn in class and they can use our library for self-study.

Social Programmes 

Whilst you study with us we will make sure you have plenty of time to have fun and make friends. We offer varied social programmes throughout the year for adult students which vary each week. We suggest students bring £15 per week to cover activity costs.

Certificates and Reports

At the end of their studies, students will be given a certificate and a report from their teacher, provided they have attended at least 80% of lessons.

Care of Students Under the Age of 18

  • Non-Teaching Days 2019 (Public Holidays) No classes on 1 January, 19 April, 22 April, 6 May, 27 May, 26 August. We will also close on 20 December 2019 and re-open on Monday 6 January 2020.

  • Levels Elementary to Advanced. Please note we do not take Beginners.
